When did you know that blink was getting back together?
When we all talked about it in the courtyard of our studio.
What direction will you take with the new album, musically? Will it be similar to older blink material, the untitled album, or something completely new?
I think it'll be the next step beyond the Untitled album. It'll sound like blink-182 still, and retain all the stuff that blink-182 is, but we were really excited about the last record and want to take the next step from there.
How much songwriting have you done since you got back together?
Quite a bit, actually. The first few months after we got back together were pretty much dedicated to writing, and throwing ideas back and forth. Some of them worked, some of them didn't, and we're really excited and positive about the new songs, and can't wait to get back to the studio and hash those out.
Do you have any timeframe for releasing Up All Night?
Nope, just as soon as we can get it done.
Who wrote Up All Night?
This is one that Tom wrote, and like all blink-182 songs, everyone's ideas go through everyone else's hands, and people change things and add stuff. The original idea came from Tom.
As far as vocals go, is it going to be both you and Tom? Just Tom?
Both of us are singing in it.
How do you feel about Tom still being a part of Angels & Airwaves?
Well, everyone does stuff outside of blink, you know, Travis works with a bunch of different artists, and produces things, and I work with a bunch of different bands, doing a lot of remixing and producing as well. I think the great thing about blink right now is that everyone is going to it, all three of us, because it's something that we love and don't get anywhere else. It's a very positive thing.
Before blink got back together, you mentioned doing a solo album. Do you still have plans of that?
I don't think so right now, but who knows what the future holds. I'm really happy with blink getting back together, and getting a lot of producing work and remixing work right now, and that's a lot of fun for me. I don't even think I'd have time to think about a solo record at this point, but, I'll never say no.
How have you grown as people and as artists through the hiatus?
I think we've done a lot of growing as people, just having a 4-year break from blink-182, and some time to step away from it and appreciate how lucky we are for what we've built. And, obviously with the different projects that everyone's been involved with and working on, we have a whole new skill set to bring to bink-182.
The so-called "blinkumentary" we've been hearing about lately. Is it going to be a continuation of the Urethra Chronicles, or something new?
I think it'll be something new. It'll still have a lot of fun stuff in it, but it won't be as silly, you know. It'll be more about us getting back together as friends, and getting back together as a band and going out on this tour and the recording of the new album, and everything that goes along with that. I think we're funny as people, and I don't think that we take ourselves that seriously, so it won't be this big epic drama or anything like that, but I think it'll be more serious than the Urethra Chronicles.
Quando hai capito che i blink sarebbero tornati assieme?
Quando ne abbiamo parlato nel cortile del nostro studio.
Che direzione prenderete musicalmente con il nuovo album? Sarà simile al vecchio materiale dei blink, all'album senza titolo o qualcosa di completamente nuovo?
Penso che sarà il passo successivo dopo l'album senza titolo. Suonerà ancora come i blink-182 e ricorderà ancora tutto quello che è blink-182, ma eravamo talmente eccitati del nostro ultimo album che vorremmo fare il prossimo passo partendo da lì.
Quando avete scritto da quando siete tornati assieme?
In effetti un bel po'. I primissimi mesi dopo che siamo tornati assieme sono stati dedicati molto alla scrittura e a tirare fuori idee vecchie e nuove. Alcune funzionavano, altre no, ed eravamo molto eccitati e positivi a proposito delle nuove canzoni tanto da non riuscire ad aspettare di tornare in studio per finirle.
Avete deciso un arco temporale in cui far uscire Up All Night?
No, prima possibile.
Chi ha scritto Up All Night?
Questa è una che ha scritto Tom e, come per tutte le canzoni dei blink-182, le idee di tutti passano per le mani degli altri così da modificare e aggiungere delle cose. L'idea originale è di Tom.
Per quanto riguarda la voce, cantate entrambi o solo Tom?
Entrambi cantiamo in questa canzone.
Come ti senti a proposito del fatto che Tom rimane negli Angels & Airwaves?
Beh, ognuno fa delle cose al di fuori dei blink, come sai Travis lavora con molti artisti diversi e fa il produttore ed io lavoro con alcuni gruppi, faccio molti remix e faccio anche il produttore. Penso che la cosa grande dei blink in questo momento è che siamo tutti e tre dentro perché è qualcosa che amiamo. È una cosa molto positiva.
Prima che i blink tornassero assieme, avevi parlato di fare un album da solista. Sei ancora intenzionato?
In questo momento non penso, ma chissà cosa succederà in futuro. Sono molto felice che siamo tornati assieme nei blink e ho molto lavoro da produttore e dei remix da fare in questo momento, ed è molto divertente per me. A questo punto non ho mai pensato di avere del tempo per pensare a un album solista, ma non dirò mai no.
Come siete cresciuti come persone e come artisti durante lo hiatus?
Penso che siamo cresciuti molto come persone solo avendo una pausa di 4 anni con i blink-182, perché il tempo che abbiamo passato ci ha fatto apprezzare quanto siamo fortunati per quello che abbiamo costruito. Ovviamente con i diversi progetti che abbiamo portato avanti, abbiamo imparato nuove cose da portare nei bink-182.
Il cosiddetto "blinkumentary" di cui abbiamo sentito parlare negli ultimi tempi sarà una continuazione di Urethra Chronicles o qualcosa di nuovo?
Penso che sarà qualcosa di nuovo. Ci sono lo stesso molte cose divertenti, ma non sarà sciocco. Parlerà molto di più di noi tornati assieme come amici e come band, del tour, della registrazione del nuovo album e di quello che ci va assieme. Penso che siamo divertenti come persone e non penso che ci prendiamo molto seriamente, quindi non sarà una grande opera drammatica o qualcosa del genere, ma penso che sarà molto più seria di Urethra Chronicles.
